IBS & FODMAPS

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the gut (bowel). Typical symptoms include bloating, stomach cramps, flatulence, diarrhoea and constipation. These symptoms tend to come and go, and can last days, weeks or months at a time.

IBS does not cause harm to your body, but can have a significant impact on peoples lives and wellbeing. While the exact cause is not known, there are strong links between IBS and gut function, psychological health and family history. IBS is usually a lifelong condition, but symptoms can be improved with diet and lifestyle changes, along with medication.

I have the expertise to carry out a full nutritional and lifestyle assessment and guide you on changes that can help improve your symptoms. I am FODMAP trained, and appropriately placed to assess and advise if the low FODMAP diet would be a suitable option for you.

I have helped hundreds of people better understand their own IBS, reduce their symptoms and stopped it having a detrimental impact on their lives.

What to expect

An initial consultation is a ‘get to know each other’ conversation. As well as your diet and medical history, we are likely to cover things such as your work, your family, any other health conditions and generally how well you feel in various aspects of your life. I will explore your symptom history, and discuss what investigations (if any) have already been done by your GP or consultant. I will ask whether you have tried any changes, and whether you felt that they were effective or not. For me, getting a good understanding of your situation means that what we talk about going forward is more relevant, and that the goals we set and work we do is more likely to work for you.

Review appointments offer you a chance to talk through how you think things are going, reflect on your progress and explore where you might like to go next. We consider any changes in your symptoms and periodically I will ask you to complete a symptom assessment questionnaire so any improvement is more evident. We can also discuss any concerns or questions you may have.

*In some cases, I will request that you complete a food diary prior to your appointment.
